District 15-A Annual Events

J.T. Maxey Scholarship Contest

j.t._maxey_app-0-1Supporting Higher Education Initiatives is a major staple in the fabric of the Texas Prince Hall Masonic Family.

All Districts of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Texas are required to support this endeavor by sponsoring a scholarship contest in their respective areas.  To this end, the Master Masons of District 15-A proudly sponsor an annual scholarship contest where several high school seniors who reside within the boundaries of the three counties that make up District 15-A come together to compete not only for cash and prizes, but also for the opportunity to represent the District at the state level J.T. Maxey Scholarship Contest, which is held during the weekend of every session of the Grand Lodge.  The District awards more than $2,000 annually in its contest, and the Grand Lodge awards more than $10,000 annually to contestants who participate in its state level contest.  The Prince Hall Family as a whole awards more than $50,000 annually to the various scholarship programs they respectfully sponsor.

Annual Thanksgiving Meal and Drive

Thanksgiving is a time  used to show humanity the love, care and charity that Prince Hall Masonry holds near and dear to it heart for the needy. The District demonstrates this principal annually by petitioning to the many lodges throughout this great district for the traditional Thanksgiving meal and sides to be donated to those less fortunate than we, through its Thanksgiving drive. As depicted in the photos to the left, the original spirit of our founding father’s tenacity, zeal and fever to assist his community still reigns deep in the hearts of all Prince Hall Masons today along with it’s Appending bodies.

Annual Bayou City Challenge

The Annual Bayou City Challenge Drumline Competition is an event that showcases the multiple talents of our generation’s youth in the fine art of percussion.  Several elementary, middle, and high school drumlines from around the state of Texas and beyond compete for cash prizes to support their respective music programs.  The contest has three separate divisions of which the various drumlines compete, and at the end of the contest (the CHALLENGE portion of the show), selected students participate in a FACE-OFF, where they compete for Best Snare Drummer, Best Tenor/Quad Drummer, Best Overall, etc.  All proceeds from this event are utilized to help fund the District’s annual scholarship contest.  If you know of a drumline that may be interested in competing, have the Percussion Director or Band Director to contact us, and we will ask them, “Are YOU ready for the CHALLENGE?”
